Maziar Peihani holds the Lawson Lundell UBC Professorship of Business Law. His teaching and research are centered on the intersection of law and the financial system, with a particular focus on banking regulation, financial crises, financial institution restructuring, and sovereign debt markets. Prior to joining UBC in 2019, he was the lead in-house expert on financial law at the Centre for International Governance Innovation, a Canadian think tank specializing in global governance, law, and regulation.
In 2018, Maziar served as a member of the Task Force on “An International Financial Architecture for Stability and Development,” advising the Argentine G20 Presidency. He also played a pivotal role in leading a policy initiative on a model law for sovereign bond restructuring in collaboration with the governments of Ontario and Singapore. His earlier career includes roles as a Senior Fellow at the Hennick Centre for Business and Law at Osgoode Hall Law School and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Banking and Financial Law at the National University of Singapore.
Maziar's research has been published in refereed journals, including the American Business Law Journal, Journal of Financial Regulation, Canadian Bar Review, and Osgoode Hall Law Journal.
In 2023, he was invited by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia to present on the resolution of small and medium-sized deposit-taking institutions at the Interagency Supervisory Research Forum in the United States. In 2021, Maziar delivered the keynote address at the Financial Protection Forum, a gathering of Canadian federal and provincial regulatory authorities.
